Welcome to Public Speaking with Peter George. This is a QuickBites episode — public speaking tips and techniques you can digest in five minutes or less. I'm Peter George, public speaking trainer, speaker, and award-winning author of The Captivating Public Speaker. In this episode, you'll learn about something absolutely critical to your success as a speaker: your core message.

Why Your Core Message Is Everything

Without a core message, your presentation is just a collection of interesting points. With one, you create lasting transformation. Here's a question: if your audience remembers only one thing from your presentation, what should it be? That's your core message — the central theme that everything else supports.

Too many speakers try to say everything about their topics. They pack in ten points, twenty sub-points, and a mountain of data. The result? Their audience remembers nothing. You can't transform people with information overload. The solution is ruthless focus on one core message.

How to Develop a Powerful Core Message

First, identify the transformation you want to create. How do you want your audience to be different after hearing you? What should they know, feel, or do? Your core message is the key insight that makes that transformation possible.

Second, make it memorable. Use a repeatable phrase, an alliteration, a metaphor, or a punchy statement. Instead of We need to address customers' needs in a timely and effective manner, try Solve problems fast, and customers will stay. Clear, memorable, and shareable.

Third, make it specific. Communication is important is too vague. But Say less to mean more is specific and actionable.

Fourth, apply the I Believe test. Put I believe in front of your message. I believe communication is important — weak. But I believe 90% of workplace conflict stems from unclear expectations, not bad intentions — now that's a compelling, defensible belief that creates curiosity.

Building Around Your Core Message

Once you have your core message, everything in your presentation must support it. Think of it like a solar system: your core message is the sun, and everything else orbits around it. If something doesn't connect, cut it — no matter how interesting it might be.

From there, develop three talking points — the main ideas that support your key message. Three is a magic number. It's substantial but not overwhelming. Each talking point should address a different aspect of your message, giving your audience a complete picture and a path forward. And give each talking point three sub-points as well.

Your Action Step

Write your core message in one sentence. Then identify three supporting talking points, each with three sub-points. Cut anything that doesn't connect.

You're not trying to say everything you know. You're trying to create one specific transformation for your audience.
