What's the one thing your audience will actually remember from your presentation a week later? Spoiler: it's not your data, your slides, or even your best joke — it's your repeatable phrase. In this episode, Peter reveals the deceptively simple technique behind the most memorable talks you've ever heard: a short, punchy statement that becomes the anchor of your entire message. You'll learn why great speakers from every field use this strategy, how it triggers recall long after you've left the stage, and what makes the difference between a phrase that sticks and one that falls flat.
You'll also get a practical playbook for crafting your own — from the ideal word count and language style to exactly when and how often to deploy it during your talk. Peter even shares his favorite advanced move: inviting your audience to finish the phrase with you, turning passive listeners into active participants. Whether you're preparing a keynote, a pitch, or your next team meeting, this episode will give you the one tool that transforms a forgettable presentation into a message your audience can't stop repeating.
Welcome to Public Speaking with Peter George. This is a QuickBites episode — public speaking tips and techniques you can digest in five minutes or less. I'm Peter George, public speaking trainer, speaker, and award-winning author of The Captivating Public Speaker. Today you'll learn about one of the simplest and most powerful techniques in public speaking: the repeatable phrase.
What a Repeatable Phrase Is — and Why It Works
A repeatable phrase is a short, memorable statement that becomes the anchor of your entire presentation. Think about the best presentations you've heard. Chances are you remember a specific phrase the speaker repeated throughout. That's not an accident. It's a deliberate strategy that makes your message stick.
More specifically, it's a short statement that captures the essence of your core message — something your audience can remember, repeat, and share. When you use it strategically, it accomplishes two things. First, it helps your audience recall your key point. When they hear that phrase, it triggers a memory of everything connected to it. Second, it creates familiarity and rhythm. Each time you repeat it, your audience recognizes it, and that recognition reinforces your message.
How to Create an Effective Repeatable Phrase
Keep it short — ideally five to seven words. Make it punchy and memorable. Use simple language that anyone can understand. Here are some examples. If you're speaking about leadership, your repeatable phrase might be: Lead by serving first. If you're talking about productivity: Do less and achieve more. And if you're talking about communication: Say less to mean more. Notice how each of these is short, clear, and actionable. That's what you're aiming for.
How to Use It Strategically
Introduce your repeatable phrase early in your presentation. Then reference it at key transitions throughout your talk — when you're moving from one talking point to another, circle back to it. And definitely drive it home in your conclusion.
But here's the key: don't overuse it. If you repeat it every 30 seconds, it becomes annoying rather than memorable. Use it four or five times in a 30-minute talk. Each repetition should feel natural and purposeful, not forced.
One technique I love is inviting your audience to complete your phrase. After you've said it several times, start it and pause, letting them finish. My own repeatable phrase is It's all about the audience. I'll say, Remember, it's not about you as the speaker. It's… — and they finish with, all about the audience. That act of participation deepens their connection to your message.
Your Action Step
For your next presentation, create a repeatable phrase that captures your core message. Test it with a colleague. If 24 hours later they can remember and repeat it easily, you've got a winner.
Your audience won't remember everything you say — but they will remember your repeatable phrase.
