How to Be Happy in the Pursuit of Your Dreams with Mike Duffy.

Listen to this episode

What does happiness have to do with public speaking? More than you might think. In this episode, Peter George sits down with Mike Duffy — philanthropist, author of five books on happiness, and founder of the Happiness Hall of Fame — to explore the mindset that makes great speakers, and great humans, possible. At the heart of Mike’s philosophy is a deceptively simple equation: Purpose plus Progress equals Happiness.

Mike shares the personal journey that led him from grief at seventeen to three decades of research and practice on sustainable happiness, and offers his prescription for pursuing your dreams without waiting for perfect conditions or silencing every critic first. He also tells a remarkable story about Muhammad Ali — one that reveals the surprising distance between public persona and private character, and reminds us why the most memorable stories often hide in plain sight.

What makes you happy? Not just in your career as a speaker, but in your life? In this episode, Peter takes a departure from the usual craft conversation to talk about something that underlies every great presentation: the person delivering it. Mike Duffy is a philanthropist, speaker, author of five books on happiness, and founder of the Happiness Hall of Fame — a decade-old institution recognizing people and organizations that make others happy.

Purpose Plus Progress Equals Happiness

Mike’s most well-known framework is elegantly simple: P + P = H. Purpose plus progress equals happiness. Sustainable happiness — the kind that isn’t a hangover waiting to happen — comes not from chasing pleasure, but from identifying the things that genuinely matter to you and making consistent, measurable progress toward them. Mike identified his purposes a decade ago and has been adding action steps ever since: how to be a great husband, a great father, a contributor to his community. Progress in those areas is what keeps him grounded, motivated, and genuinely content.

Ignore the Haters. Pursue the Dream.

If you have a dream that doesn’t fit in a college catalog, Mike’s message is clear: you don’t have to quit your job on day one. Start a side hustle. Begin small and build deliberately. What you can’t do, if you want to be happy, is let the fear of other people’s criticism talk you out of starting at all. He draws on Brené Brown’s concept of living in the arena — the people raining down criticism from the cheap seats have never had to withstand what the people in the ring endure. Know your purpose. Start today. Tune out the noise.

The Muhammad Ali Story

Mike spent hours with Muhammad Ali and his wife at the Ali Museum in preparation for inducting the boxing legend into the Happiness Hall of Fame. What he heard there reframed everything he thought he knew about one of the most famous personalities in the world. The public persona — the bravado, the showmanship — was a performance designed to sell tickets. In private, Ali was a man who invited complete strangers off the street into his home for dinner and offered them a place to stay. That gap between public image and private character, Mike says, is where some of the most powerful stories live.

“Purpose plus progress equals happiness. Identify what matters, make progress toward it — and that’s when happiness shows up, sustainably, and on your own terms.”

Anxiety is the enemy of happiness. So is worry. And so, Mike would argue, is staying on the sidelines because you’re afraid to begin. Get in the arena. Pursue the dream. Make other people happy along the way — because it turns out that’s one of the most reliable paths to making yourself happy too. I’ll see you next time.
