When you speak, do you quickly engage and connect with the audience? Do the audience members remember you, and more importantly, do they remember your message and how it benefits them? In this episode, my guest, Chandler Walker, helps you ensure all of this happens every time you speak in public.

Chandler has spoken on stages, both big and small, in several countries, including the US, Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, and more. With over ten years of experience in the business and speaking world, Chandler has a passion for sharing the knowledge he's gained and has learned to embrace failure as an opportunity for growth and the pursuit of mastery.

Transcript

Chandler Walker has spoken in multiple countries over more than a decade, and he's built a reputation for doing something most speakers are afraid to do: challenge his audience. In this episode, he shares his three-step strategy for speaking with authority, getting people emotionally invested, and being genuinely unforgettable — not just politely well-received.

From mastering paradoxical thought patterns that rewire the way an audience thinks, to using humor and modern culture to keep energy high, Chandler's framework is built around transformation over information. You'll also hear what to do when you lose an audience mid-talk, why embracing imperfection is one of your most powerful tools, and three concrete steps you can take before your very next presentation.

The Three-Step Strategy for Speaking with Authority

Peter: Chandler, you have a three-step strategy for speaking more confidently from the stage. Walk us through it.

Chandler: The three steps are: become a challenging leader, master paradoxical thought patterns, and install what I call the captivation engine. A challenging leader keeps the audience on the edge of their seats — challenging their beliefs, their paradigms, their assumptions — so they want and need to learn more. Paradoxical thought patterns are the internal beliefs that tell people they can't succeed — and knowing how to call those out is where the transformation happens. And the captivation engine is about using your tonality and story — the ups, the downs, the drama — to keep people fully present simply through the way you speak.

Why You Have to Challenge Your Audience

Chandler: A lot of speakers go on stage wanting to make people happy. They don't want to challenge anyone because they don't want to upset them. But if you don't challenge people, they'll leave mentally. They're chasing butterflies. They don't care. The speakers who challenge their audiences are the ones people remember — because you changed the way they think. That removes you from the commoditization market where every speaker sounds the same.

Mastering Paradoxical Thought Patterns

Chandler: Paradoxical thought patterns are about taking the internal issues your audience carries and calling them out publicly. At a health conference, I might ask: how many of you have tried to lose weight? Every hand goes up. How many have been successful long-term? Almost none. Why? Think back to your childhood — your parents made you clean your plate. That trained you to overeat. So maybe it's not the diets at all. Maybe the pattern was set in childhood. In one moment, I've completely reframed the way they think about their problem. That's when they look at me and say, "Okay — what do I do now?" That's when I've captivated them.

People will forget everything you said, but they'll always remember the way you made them feel.

Speak to Transform, Not Just Inform

Chandler: It's a major difference. We're no longer saying "here are the three steps to do this thing." We're saying: here's the old way, here's the new way, here's why what you've been doing hasn't been working, and here's how you can finally succeed. When you speak to transform rather than inform, you move from being a talking head to being a thought leader.

Research Your Audience — Then Go Deeper

Chandler: I always ask the event organizer: who is your audience, what are they reading, where can I find them? Then I do real audience research — Amazon bestseller lists, Reddit threads, blogs and forums in their space. Not just to understand how they think on the surface, but to understand the real inward beliefs they carry. That's what lets me surface the right objections during the speech and speak to them at a level they haven't been spoken to before.

Three Steps for Any Speaker Ready to Step Up

Chandler: Step one: just do it. Build a slide deck — bullet points and pictures — where each picture anchors a story and each story carries humor. That's your storyboard. Step two: when you screw up, call it out. You're an imperfect human. When you own it, the audience is okay with it too. Step three: always drive toward a single transformational point. Your talk has to lead somewhere — to a new paradigm, a new way of thinking — something they haven't heard before. It doesn't need to be original. It just needs to be framed in a way they've never encountered.

Peter: Chandler, where can listeners find you?

Chandler: Go to instagram.com/chandler_saf and DM me the word help. I'll send you a simple three-step strategy you can use right away to challenge paradigms and speak to an audience that truly wants more.
