QuickBites: How to Immediately Grab Your Audience's Attention.

Listen to this episode

On a warm July night, a young Peter George watched Eric Clapton walk on stage in the dark, wait a full minute in silence, and unleash a single chord that brought the house to life. In this Quick Bytes episode, that memory becomes a masterclass in opening — and a challenge to every speaker who has ever walked to the microphone and started with "before I begin, I'd like to thank..."

Peter explains why grabbing your audience's attention in the first moments of a presentation is far more important than most speakers realize, and walks through the most effective ways to do it — including why a question paired with a story is one of the most powerful combinations in any speaker's toolkit. He also makes the case for memorizing your opening, explaining why the first 30 seconds of a talk is the worst time to be winging it. Short, practical, and immediately applicable to your next presentation.

The Eric Clapton Opening

What's the best opening you've ever experienced? A book, a film, a play, a talk? For me, it happened on a warm July evening when my high school girlfriend and I went to see Eric Clapton — the first concert for each of us.

At exactly eight o'clock, the house lights went out. With no stage lights on, the room was eerily dark. A full minute passed. Then, without warning, a chord rang out from Eric's guitar. The stage lights flashed on and the band came to life. In that single instant, the audience was completely, utterly hooked.

How different would it have been if the band had strolled out with the lights already on, walked up to the microphone, and said: "Hey, Providence, it's great to be here. But before we begin, I'd like to thank XYZ Productions for scheduling this event. And we have to give a nod to the local roadies who helped our crew." The music would have been just as good. But would the experience have been the same? Would the memory have stayed as vivid after all these years?

Why the Opening Matters

Whether speaking in a meeting or on stage, you need to grab your audience's attention immediately. The greatest reason is simple: if you don't hook your listeners from the beginning, you'll have to work especially hard to get them engaged. And even if you can accomplish that, it's almost always an uphill battle.

If you don't grab your listeners' attention from the beginning, you'll have to work especially hard to get them engaged — and it's often an uphill battle.

Consider writing. When you pick up an article, does the author begin by thanking the publisher? Do they open by saying how excited they are to write for you? Do they note their own nervousness? No. They get right to the point. That's precisely what you should do when you present.

How to Open Your Presentation

There are several ways to quickly engage an audience: a striking image or video, startling statistics, a compelling quote. But perhaps the two most impactful openings are a question and a story. Each has the opportunity to captivate your listeners immediately. And when you combine them — asking a question and then answering it with a story — it's beyond powerful. This is how I open most of my presentations.

Because adrenaline is especially high at the start of any presentation, I strongly recommend memorizing your opening. Doing so reduces nervousness, frees you to connect with your audience, and prepares you to deliver with impact. Do your listeners — and yourself — a favor: create an attention-grabbing opening every single time you step up to speak.
