It's Not "Have To" Speak. It's "Get To" Speak.

What if the presentations you dread are actually the opportunities you've been waiting for? Most professionals treat workplace speaking as an obligation to survive. Something to get through. But that mindset is quietly costing you, because your audience can feel it the moment you start.

In this episode, you'll learn why two small words shape everything about how you show up, and how flipping them changes your energy, your preparation, and the impact you have on the room. You'll walk away with a new lens for every meeting, presentation, and unexpected "say a few words" moment on your calendar, plus a simple action step you can apply to the next one.

Whether you're presenting to your team, your CEO, a client, or a room full of strangers, this shift will change how they experience you, and how you experience the moment.

Welcome to Public Speaking with Peter George. Do you want to be calm, confident, and credible every time you speak in public? Then stay tuned as we discuss public speaking tips, techniques, and tactics that help you increase your impact, influence, and income.

Somewhere along the way, speaking at work got a bad reputation.

The all-hands update. The board presentation. The team meeting where your boss says, "Why don't you walk us through it?" For a lot of professionals, those moments land the same way: a knot in the stomach, a full calendar suddenly feeling heavier, and a quiet voice saying, "I have to speak again."

I want to challenge that voice today, because those two words, "have to," are doing more damage than you realize.

The Cost of "Have To"

When you tell yourself you have to speak, you frame the moment as a burden. Something being done to you. An obligation to survive. And the second you take the stage, or hit unmute, or stand up at the front of the room, your audience feels exactly that. They feel your reluctance. They feel you counting down the minutes until it's over. And they check out, because you already did.

Make the Flip

Now try the flip. You don't have to speak. You get to speak.

You get to be the person in the room who was chosen, or trusted, or asked. You get a few minutes of undivided attention from people whose calendars are just as packed as yours. You get to shape how they think about a project, a decision, a possibility they haven't considered. That's not a burden. That's a gift, and it is rare.

What Changes When You Flip It

Here's what shifts when you make that flip. Your energy changes. Your prep changes. Your questions change. Instead of asking, "How do I get through this?" you start asking, "How do I serve them?" What do they need to know? What are they worried about? What decision are they trying to make? What weight can I lift off their shoulders in the next ten minutes?

Public speaking, stripped of the nerves and the slides and the pressure, is an act of service.

Speaking as Service

That's what public speaking actually is when you strip away the nerves and the slides and the pressure. It is an act of service. Whether you are speaking to a client, a colleague, your team, your CEO, or a room full of strangers, you are there to give them something they did not have when they walked in. Clarity. Confidence. A path forward. A reason to care.

And when you show up with that mindset, the nerves do not vanish, but they lose their grip. Because you are no longer thinking about yourself. You are thinking about them.

Your Action Step

When you create your next presentation, at the top of the page write "HAVE TO" in big letters. Then cross it out and write "GET TO" in even bigger letters.

Remember, you were asked to speak for a reason. Treat that as the gift it is, and your audience will feel the difference before you say a word.
