It seems like an obvious progression … you write and publish your book and you’re ask to speak at an event, on a podcast, or even on television.
What isn’t necessarily obvious to those who asked you to speak, however, is that just because you can write at a high level doesn’t mean you can present to audiences at a high level. Writing and speaking are two entirely different things.
Sitting alone at your desk and writing is different from standing in front of an audience and speaking.
Being able to write and edit is different from having one opportunity to get it right.
Engaging readers through the written word is entirely different from engaging people who are sitting in front of you, listening to your voice and watching your body language.
So, what do you do?
One
You can decline the opportunity. Not a good choice, but it’s a safe one.
Two
You can accept the invitation and experience the apprehension that goes along with speaking to audiences who are expecting a high level of confidence and competence. Even worse, you could wing it!
Three
You can accept the invitation and have your spoken words resonate with your listeners every bit as powerfully as your written words resonate with your readers. When you do, you confirm in the minds of your readers that you are as talented as they believed. You also compel others to purchase your books.
Speaking (make that speaking effectively) helps you reach more people. It helps you build credibility. It can even be the driving force that helps you achieve the success you’ve envisioned.
And don’t let the fact that you’re an introvert hold you back! Many great speakers are/were introverts, including Abraham Lincoln, Barack Obama, Winston Churchill, Steve Jobs, and Tom Hanks and countless others.
