In this QuickBites episode, you will discover one of the simplest and most powerful tools available to any speaker: repetition. You will learn how Dr. Martin Luther King used repeated phrases — not just "I have a dream," but "let freedom ring" and "free at last" — to make his message unforgettable, and how you can apply the same technique in your own presentations.
You will walk away knowing how many times to repeat a phrase so it resonates without feeling excessive, and exactly where in your talk to place those repeated words or sentences for maximum impact. Whether you are speaking to ten people or ten thousand, repetition is a tool you can start using right now.
Welcome to QuickBites — public speaking tips and techniques you can digest in five minutes or less.
Want to make a point more memorable? Then remember this: repetition has power. Dr. Martin Luther King's most famous phrase — "I have a dream" — wasn't even in his original prepared remarks. He ad-libbed it from a speech he had given before, including just two months earlier in Detroit, because he sensed the crowd needed something more.
The Power of Repeated Phrases
Most of us can recall Dr. King's intent and several of his repeated phrases, even decades later. "I have a dream." "Let freedom ring." "Free at last." In that speech, he said "I have a dream" nine times and "let freedom ring" eight times. Repetition didn't weaken those phrases — it made them unforgettable.
How to Use Repetition in Your Talks
You don't need to repeat a phrase a dozen times to make it land. Depending on the length and tone of your presentation, saying something two or three times is often enough to make it stick without feeling excessive. Look for places in your talks where you can insert a word, phrase, or sentence you want your audience to grab onto and take with them.
Repetition has power.
