Most speakers learn by watching others — studying their gestures, their pacing, their delivery — and then trying to replicate it. The problem? Audiences can feel the difference between someone who is performing and someone who is present. If you've ever walked off a stage feeling like you were playing a role rather than owning the room, this episode is going to change the way you think about your development as a speaker.
In this episode, you learn why your most powerful speaking asset isn't a technique you can borrow — it's the authentic voice you already possess. You'll discover how to identify your natural strengths, develop the signature elements that make you unforgettable, and build a style that is unmistakably, unapologetically you. Whether you're just starting out or you've been speaking for years, this conversation will challenge you to stop chasing someone else's style and start trusting your own.
Welcome to Public Speaking with Peter George. This is a QuickBites episode — public speaking tips and techniques you can digest in five minutes or less. I'm Peter George, public speaking trainer, speaker, and award-winning author of The Captivating Public Speaker. In this episode, you're going to learn how your most powerful speaking asset isn't a technique you can borrow. It's the authentic voice you already possess.
Why Copying Doesn't Work
New speakers watch successful speakers and try to copy them — their gestures, their pacing, their humor. It seldom works, because they're trying to be someone they're not. The speakers who truly captivate audiences aren't imitating anyone. They're expressing themselves authentically. Yes, you can learn techniques and frameworks from others, but ultimately you must find and express your own voice.
How to Develop Your Unique Speaking Style
Start with your authentic self. Your personality, experiences, values, and perspectives are your raw materials. Naturally energetic? Lean in. More thoughtful and measured? That works too. Humorous? Great. More serious? Equally powerful. Authenticity — not conformity — is the key.
Lean into your natural strengths. Are you a natural storyteller? Make stories central. Do you excel at simplifying complexity? Own that. Do you connect through vulnerability? Share it. You don't need to be funny if humor isn't your strength. Build on what you do well and make it your signature.
Find your natural speaking rhythm. Record yourself in conversation — not presenting, just talking. Notice your pacing, your word choices, your natural flow. That's your style. Adapt it slightly for the stage, but don't abandon it.
Develop your signature elements. These are the things audiences will associate with you: a particular opening technique, a recurring phrase, a unique way of engaging the room, a visual style. These elements become your brand as a speaker.
Know your audience and adapt appropriately. Your core style stays consistent, but execution shifts by context. Corporate executives may require a polished tone. Entrepreneurs may welcome a casual, high-energy approach. The context changes. The authentic you does not.
Evolve intentionally. Your style will develop naturally with experience — and that's good. But evolve consciously. Reflect on what's working and what isn't. Want to improve your storytelling? Study it, practice it, integrate it gradually. The key word is gradual. Don't overhaul your style after every presentation.
Study diverse speakers — not to copy, but to understand the range of effective styles. When something resonates, ask: What from this fits my authentic self? How might I adapt it in my own way?
Get feedback from trusted sources — those who have seen you speak multiple times. Ask what feels authentic and where you might be forcing it. That outside perspective reveals what you can't see yourself.
Your Action Step
After your next presentation, note the moments when you felt most like yourself. Those moments are clues. Do more of that.
The most captivating speakers bring their full, authentic selves to the stage. Find your voice. Trust it. And let it shine.
