The Power of the Pause.

Listen to this episode

Most speakers are terrified of silence — so they fill every gap with words, filler phrases, and nervous chatter. In this QuickBites episode, Peter George flips that instinct on its head and makes a compelling case for the strategic pause as one of the most powerful tools in public speaking. Just as silence in music creates rhythm and emotion, silence in a presentation creates emphasis, connection, and moments your audience will actually remember.

Peter introduces five types of strategic pauses — emphasis, dramatic, processing, interactive, and transitional — and shows exactly when and how to deploy each one. He also tackles the two concerns speakers raise most often: won't I look like I've lost my place, and how long is long enough? The answers might surprise you. By the end of this episode, you'll have a simple exercise to start practicing immediately — and a completely new relationship with silence.

Transcript

Welcome to Public Speaking with Peter George. This is a QuickBites episode — public speaking tips and techniques you can digest in five minutes or less. I'm Peter George, public speaking trainer, speaker, and award-winning author of The Captivating Public Speaker. In this episode, you're going to learn about one of the most powerful tools in public speaking: the pause. Master this, and you'll command attention, emphasize key points, and create memorable moments.

Why Silence Feels So Uncomfortable

Silence makes most speakers uncomfortable. We feel compelled to fill every second with words, as if any gap means we've lost our place. But here's the truth: strategic silence is one of your most powerful tools. Think about music. Those moments of silence are just as important as the notes. They create rhythm, emphasis, and emotion. The same is true in speaking.

Let me give you an example. There are three keys to success. Persistence, vision, and faith. See how everything runs together and loses its impact? How about this instead: There are three keys to success. [pause] Persistence. [pause] Vision. [pause] And faith. Not only can you hear the difference — you can feel the difference.

Five Types of Strategic Pauses

The emphasis pause. Pause right before or after your most important points. For example: And then I discovered something that changed everything. [pause] Or: The solution is simpler than you think. [pause] But only if you're willing to act on it.

The dramatic pause. This one runs three to five seconds. Use it sparingly for maximum impact. Example: What if I told you that everything you've learned about this topic is wrong? [long pause] Because it is.

The processing pause. After delivering complex information, give your audience time to absorb it. Example: Our analysis showed that the system failure wasn't due to technology. It was due to a communication breakdown among three departments that thought they were aligned. [pause]

The interactive pause. Invite your audience to complete a thought. Example: Success requires preparation, opportunity, and … [pause — let them finish] Execution.

Two Common Concerns — Answered

Won't pauses make me seem like I've forgotten my words? Not if your pause is confident. A strategic pause is deliberate — you maintain eye contact and exude confidence. An uncertain pause is accompanied by ums, shifting eyes, and fidgeting. The difference is immediately visible to your audience.

How long should I pause? A good rule of thumb: at least two to three seconds. It will feel eternal to you, but perfect to your audience.

Your Exercise

Take a paragraph from your next presentation and mark three strategic pauses. Practice them. Make them longer than what feels comfortable. Record yourself. You'll likely find that even when you think you're pausing too long — you might not be pausing long enough.

Silence isn't your enemy. It's your ally. Master the pause and you'll master emphasis, create engagement, and give your words the weight they deserve.
