QuickBites: Why You Want to Be the Guide Not the Hero.

Listen to this episode

If your audiences aren't as engaged as you'd like, the problem may not be your content — it may be your mindset. In this episode, you'll learn one of the most important shifts a speaker can make: stepping out of the spotlight and letting your audience be the hero. Peter explains why the instinct to prove your expertise is actually the thing that distances you from the very people you're trying to reach.

Drawing on stories that have stood the test of time — from Yoda and Luke Skywalker to the Lone Ranger and Batman — you'll see why the most powerful role a speaker can play is that of the guide. Make this shift, and your audiences will feel understood, valued, and far more willing to follow wherever you lead them.

Welcome to QuickBites, public speaking tips and techniques you can digest in five minutes or less. I'm Peter George, author of The Captivating Public Speaker.

Do you want to engage your audience throughout your talks? It's not as difficult as many people believe — but only if you make one critical mindset shift right now.

The Mistake of Making It About You

One of the most common mistakes speakers make is believing that they not only have to be the expert, but they also have to prove it. Inherent in that belief is a focus on the speaker rather than the audience. When that happens, the opportunity to serve and benefit the audience is lost.

Think of it this way: the audience is in attendance because they want or need to benefit from what you have to say. They're very much like a customer walking into a store — they're there for their own benefit. And anyone who runs a business knows that the customer is the hero. Everyone serving the customer is the guide.

The Hero Is Never the One with the Knowledge

Stories that have survived the test of time show us this principle in action. In Star Wars, Yoda had the most experience of any Jedi and the most powerful use of the Force — yet he wasn't the hero. That was Luke Skywalker: the one who didn't even know he had the Force, who needed guidance at every turn. The same is true of the Lone Ranger and Tonto, and Batman and Alfred. In every case, the guide holds the knowledge. The hero is the one who needs it.

Be the guide. Let your listeners be the heroes.

Be the Guide

So when you speak in public — whether it's on stage, in a conference room, or anywhere else — be the guide. Let your listeners be the heroes. When you do, they'll realize that you truly understand their wants, needs, and desires. And that is exactly what keeps them engaged from your first word to your last.
