Perfectionism in public speaking is more common — and more costly — than most speakers realize. In this QuickBites episode, Peter George shares the story of one of his most gifted clients, a speaker named Meredith, who had every technical skill imaginable yet was leaving audiences cold. The reason? Her perfectionism was standing between her and genuine connection.
Peter shares the simple but powerful mindset shift that changed everything for Meredith, and explains how you can make the same shift. If you’ve ever over-prepared, over-rehearsed, or walked offstage feeling stiff despite knowing your material cold, this episode is for you.
Welcome to QuickBites, public speaking tips and techniques you can digest in five minutes or less. Here’s your host, Peter George.
When it comes to preparing for presentations, there are two extremes. At one end is the speaker who barely prepares — happy to fly by the seat of their pants. At the other is the perfectionist who wants every moment calculated to the nth degree. The truth is, both extremes work for only a rare few.
The Sterile Perfectionist
One of Peter’s clients — a speaker named Meredith — had extraordinary natural gifts. Her words were spot-on, her vocal variety incomparable, her body language and eye contact impeccable. Watching her was like watching a singer who could move people so deeply they’d never forget where they were when they first heard the song. And yet, for all that technical brilliance, her presentations were absolutely sterile. Her perfectionism had quietly cost her the one thing that makes speaking powerful: genuine human connection.
Focus on connection, not perfection. That simple shift transformed Meredith’s speaking — and it can transform yours too.
The Shift That Changes Everything
After working through her perfectionism, Meredith centered her speaking life on a single maxim: focus on connection, not perfection. To reinforce it, she put those words on her bathroom mirror, just above the speedometer in her car, and as the wallpaper on her phone and computer. Every time she spoke, her goal wasn’t to be flawless — it was to connect. That meant allowing vulnerability, embracing the occasional imperfection, and being genuinely authentic with the people in front of her. The results were transformational.
If perfectionism is holding you back, the invitation is the same: shift your mindset, let yourself be real, and trust that connection matters more than technical precision. Peter speaks from personal experience — perfectionism has been a lifelong challenge for him too. It costs a lot, gets you little, and wastes enormous amounts of time.
