Welcome to Public Speaking with Peter George. Do you want to be calm, confident, and credible every time you speak in public? Then stay tuned as we discuss public speaking tips, techniques, and tactics that help you increase your impact, influence, and income.

Personal branding expert and entrepreneurial connector Jen Campbell helps professionals gain clarity, grow their communities, and increase conversations through strategy, coaching, and mentorship. Recognized by Facebook for her community-building work, Jen joins the show to explain what personal branding really is — and how speakers can use it to attract more gigs, command higher fees, and have clients coming to them.

What Personal Branding Actually Is

Jen: Personal branding has three components: how you see yourself, how others see you, and how you want to be seen. When those three things align — when there's no disconnect between them — it allows others to see the best of who you are and what you do. Most people don't realize that others are already forming opinions about them. It's better to shape that narrative before someone else does.

Brand Yourself Before Others Do

Jen: The biggest myth in personal branding is that you don't need it. The fact is, people are going to Google you. They're going to form opinions within the first three seconds of finding you online — just like they do when you walk onto a stage. You want to control what they find. And you don't need to be everywhere; you need to be consistent and intentional on the platforms where your audience lives.

Brand yourself before others do — because they're going to form an opinion about you either way.

Choosing the Right Platform

Jen: Know who your target demographic is, and go where they are. LinkedIn is ideal for building credibility in professional fields. Facebook is powerful for personal connection and community-building. Instagram and TikTok lean toward shorter video content. You don't have to be on every platform — but you should have a presence on all of them, even if you're only active on one. And everyone in a professional space needs a LinkedIn profile.

Authenticity and Consistency Are Everything

Jen: Gen Z — one of the most influential consumer groups alive — values authenticity above everything else. Eighty-four percent of businesses believe they're being authentic in their marketing, but only forty-seven percent of consumers agree. When you're not showing who you really are, people sense it. Show up as the same person online as you are in person. Use a current photo. Post consistently. Be the warm version of yourself — not the curated, filtered version.

How to Discover Your Actual Brand

Jen: Ask people who know you to describe you in three words — then compare their answers to how you'd describe yourself. It's eye-opening. Many of the words people used to describe me were better than what I would have chosen. Those words became the foundation of my brand. When you know your three core keywords, you can build everything — your social profiles, your domain, your content — around them.

What Speakers Can Do to Get More Gigs

Jen: Own your domain. Define your three keywords and use them consistently. Create both a personal profile and a business page. Get your name on as many reputable corners of the internet as possible — podcast interviews, YouTube videos, your own website. Collect endorsements and reviews with backlinks. The more places Google can find you associated with what you do, the higher you rank — and the more speaking opportunities will come to you.

Peter: Jen, how can our listeners connect with you?

Jen: You can find me at jencampbell.com and jencampbellteaches.com, where I have templates to help you identify your target demographic and build your brand. I'm also on Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn as Jen Campbell Teaches.
