How to Learn and Borrow from Speakers, Musicians, and Comedians with Jeff Belanger.
The best public speakers don’t just learn from other public speakers — they study musicians, comedians, actors, and anyone else who knows how to command a room. In this episode, Peter George is joined by Jeff Belanger, Emmy-nominated host and producer of New England Legends, to explore what a performer’s mindset can do for your presentations. Jeff has taken acting classes, improv workshops, and spent years in close observation developing a speaking style that is equal parts authentic and masterfully crafted.
Jeff shares what comedians understand about timing that most speakers miss, how sensory storytelling puts audiences inside the experience rather than just hearing about it, and why thinking of public speaking as a performance isn’t a dirty word — it’s a commitment to your audience. Whether you’re presenting in a boardroom or on a main stage, this conversation will challenge the way you think about preparation, adaptability, and what it really means to connect.
Welcome to Public Speaking with Peter George. Do you want to be calm, confident, and credible every time you speak in public? Then stay tuned as we discuss public speaking tips, techniques, and tactics that help you increase your impact, influence, and income.
Everyone has a speaking style. The goal isn’t to copy someone else’s — it’s to learn from the best, borrow what fits, and make it entirely your own. Jeff Belanger has been doing exactly that for decades. An author, podcaster, storyteller, and Emmy-nominated host and producer of the New England Legends series on PBS and Amazon Prime, Jeff brings a performer’s sensibility to everything he does on stage.
Public Speaking Is a Performance
Jeff thinks of every speaking engagement as a performance — not in the sense of being inauthentic, but in the sense of showing up prepared, present, and ready to create something real in the room. He draws the parallel to musicians who’ve played the same song a thousand times and still tap into the emotion that was there when they first wrote it. That’s craft. That’s mastery. And it’s completely compatible with structure, preparation, and intentional storytelling. Winging it, Jeff says, is one of the most disrespectful things a speaker can do to an audience.
What Comedians Know That Most Speakers Don’t
Jeff credits much of his development to watching and learning from performers — particularly stand-up comedians, who understand timing better than almost anyone. He shares a story about a full-time comic who killed it for 45 minutes in a hot room one year and died on stage the following year in a cold one. The lesson: the room is always a variable. Great performers read it, adapt to it, and keep going when things don’t go as planned. Improv classes, acting workshops, and simply watching great performers work made Jeff a sharper, more adaptable speaker.
Stories, Senses, and the Structure That Makes Them Land
Jeff’s approach to storytelling is rooted in structure: grab them early, take them somewhere, hit a climax, and land with intention. He’s deliberate about sensory detail — not for its own sake, but because the right details transport people into the experience rather than just telling them about it. When he describes the catacombs in Paris, he doesn’t just tell you where they are. He puts you 30 meters underground, in cool air, hearing water drip through limestone and gravel crunch underfoot. That’s what makes a story stick long after the talk is over.
“If you don’t think of it as a performance — something you’ve prepared for your audience — you’ve already let them down before you’ve said a word.”
Every speaker has something to learn from people who aren’t speakers at all. Watch the comedians. Study the musicians. Take an improv class. And never, ever wing it. I’ll see you next time.
