Pre-Event Connection: Engage Before You Speak.

June 17, 2026 4:40 min
Listen to this episode

What if your audience already felt connected to you before you said a single word? The most effective speakers don't wait until they're on stage to start building relationships — they begin well before the event starts.

In this episode, you get six practical pre-event engagement strategies that reduce your nerves, warm up your audience, and sharpen your content. From creating a short connection video to conducting a pre-event survey, each approach is designed to help you walk on stage to a room that's already on your side.

Welcome to Public Speaking with Peter George. Do you want to be calm, confident, and credible every time you speak in public? Then stay tuned as we discuss public speaking tips, techniques, and tactics that help you increase your impact, influence, and income.

Do you want to connect with your audience even before you say a word? Then this episode is for you.

Most speakers think engagement starts when they begin speaking. That's a mistake. By the time you're on stage, you've already missed opportunities to build connection, create anticipation, and establish trust.

This is where strategic pre-event engagement comes in.

Create a Connection Video

Record a short video — two to three minutes — that introduces you and previews your presentation. Share three things: who you are, the topics they'll be learning about, and most importantly, why it matters to them. Make it personal and conversational. End with excitement, perhaps: "I can't wait to meet you and explore this together." Give this to the event organizer to share via email or on the event website. When attendees watch it beforehand, you're no longer a stranger. You're already familiar.

Reach Out on Social Media

If the event has a hashtag, use it. Share your excitement, post a teaser about your topic, and engage with attendees who are also posting. Every interaction builds familiarity.

Offer Pre-Event Resources

Create a one-page resource related to your topic and have the organizer share it with registered attendees, something like "Five Questions to Consider Before My Presentation." This primes them to engage more deeply during your talk.

Conduct a Pre-Event Survey

Ask the organizer to send a brief survey — three to five questions — about attendees' biggest challenges, their questions, and their goals. This gives you real-time intelligence to customize your content. And attendees feel heard before you even start.

Arrive Early and Meet People

Show up before the event and introduce yourself as attendees arrive. Ask what they hope to learn. These conversations transform the dynamic. You're not a speaker performing for an audience. You're a person having a conversation with people you've already met.

Leverage the Event Organizer

Ask them to craft an introduction that creates curiosity and connection, not just a review of your credentials. The audience should be thinking, "I need to hear what this person has to say."

Pre-event engagement should feel personal, generous, and audience-focused.

Here's what pre-event engagement accomplishes. It reduces your nervousness because you're speaking to people you've already connected with. It increases audience engagement because they feel invested in you before you start. It improves your content because you have real intelligence about what they need. And it positions you as thoughtful and professional.

Pre-event engagement should feel personal, generous, and audience-focused. Generic, corporate communication misses the point entirely.

Your Action Step

For your next speaking engagement, implement at least two pre-event strategies. Create a video. Conduct a survey. Arrive an hour early to meet attendees. Choose two and execute them well.

Start building connection before you speak, and you'll deliver to an audience that's already on your side.
